The Sabarimala temple is located on the top of a hill in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It is dedicated to lord Ayyappan, worshipped as the son of Shiva and Mohini( a female form of Vishnu). The temple sees over 10 to 15 million devotees annually, making it one of the world's largest seasonal pilgrimages.
It remains open only during specific periods such as Mandala Pooja(November-December) and Makaravilakku (January). It is situated in the middle of scenic hills, the temple is accessible only after a challenging trek through forests, symbolizing spiritual discipline and devotion.
Sabarimala holds deep spiritual significance due to its unique traditions and thorough & inclusive religious rituals. Devotees usually take a 41 day strict vratham or deeksha, live simply wearing mala and trek barefoot to the temple reprsenting their devotion.
After, reaching the temple, they climb the holy 18 steps, each representing moral values before receiving darshan of the diety. All devotees are called "Swami" and all caste, gender, and social divisions are left behind during the pilgrimage, encouraging a sense of unity.
