The term ‘Swayambhu’ is a Sanskrit word which means self-manifested or self-existing. This term is used to describe the deity present in the temple that does not come from human creation but from divine origin. Swayambhu is a word formed by combining two words ‘Swayam’ means ‘self’ and ‘bhu’ means ‘arising’. Swayambhu deities are more powerful as they themselves come to protect mankind from the consequences.
Also, they shower blessings to the devotees and make their dreams come true. There are so many swayambhu temples across the country. However, we can also see a lot of swayambhu temples in Hyderabad. Let us see the different swayambhu temples of Hyderabad here.
Sri Murali Manohar Swami Mandir is a popular temple in Kishan bagh Hyderabad, with a swayambhu idol of lord Krishna. According to the temple history, lord Krishna came into the dreams of Raghav Ramji, the landlord saying the place where lord resided and asked to build a temple. Then, Ramji requested the previous muslim land owner and bought the land. Later, he dug and found the idol of lord Krishna and built the temple for him. Raghava Ramji was the joint founder of Kashibugga temple and Murali Manohara Swamy temple.

Kasibugga temple is a temple of lord Siva at the banks of Musi river and the linga is underground. This linga receives constant water flow as abhishekam from a mysterious water source. It is called a Swayambhu idol.

Karmanghat Hanuman Temple is located in karmanghat, near Santosh Nagar, Hyderabad with swayambhu deity of lord Hanuman, being worshiped as Dhyana Anjaneya. It is closer to the Nagarjuna Sagar Ring Road. The temple also has other shrines of lord Rama, Shiva, Saraswati, Durga, Santoshimata, Venugopala and Jagannath. This temple was built in 1198 by the Kakatiya King Prola II. When the king went hunting and was resting under a tree, he heard the chanting of lord Rama’s name. He then discovered a stone idol of lord Hanuman. Later, lord appeared in the dreams of the king and asked him to construct a temple.

An 800 years old ancient temple with the swayambhu deity of lord Sri Venkateswara Swami. It was built in 1219 by Bhulumalle Narsaiah and has a pillar representing this proof. This temple is called a Hari Hara Kshetra where lord Shiva and lord Vishnu reside in one place. Lord Vishnu is a swayambhu deity and is present here as Mohini and is on the left side of lord Shiva idol. There is a koneru inside the temple called Mahanand. This temple is also called Sri Balaji Venkateswara Swamy Devasthanam.

Jagadamba Mahankali temple is about 900 to 1000 years old temple which was built during the early Kakatiya period. A Mahankali temple is located in the vicinity, within Golconda fort. During the Kakatiya ruling period, in the year 1143, on a pile of stones called Mangalavaram, a cow-herd saw the idol of goddess. Pratap Ridra Raju, Nawab during that period, had built a fort with mud and named it Golla Konda Kota(fort).

This is a popular temple of lord Sri Krishna being worshiped as Sri Govardhana Giri Venugopala Swamy. It is located on Govardhangiri which is a hillock in KPHB. This temple houses the deities of lord Hanuman & lord Krishna alongwith Sri Rajyalakshmi Devi, Sri Rukmimi Devi, Sri Satyabhama devi and Sri Goda Devi. There is also a temple garden and Goshala, for feeding cows. Devotees can also darshan the padas of lord Sri Krishna.

Chilkur Balaji temple is a popular temple of lord Sri Venkateswara Swami. As per the temple history, it is said that a devotee of lord Venkateswara used to visit Tirupati every year. One year due to his improper health, he could not undertake the journey and felt disappointed. Lord Venkateswara appeared in his dreams and told him that there was no need for the devotee to travel to Tirupati to receive his darshan and he was nearby. The next day, the devotee got bitten by an ant and a voice came out from the anthill asking to pour cow’s milk. Later that devotee found the idols of lord Balaji & Sreedevi and Bhudevi. These idols are being worshiped till today in Chilukur.
