Badami is a town in Karnataka which is formerly known as Vaataapi ( Vaata - wind, aapi - friend 'having wind as an friend). It was the royal cpaital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757. This town was familiar for its rock cut monuments such as Badami cave temples.
Badami has been selected as one of the heritage cities for Heritage City Development & Augmentaion Yojana which is a scheme of Indian Government.
