Bara Kaman is the unfinished mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II in Bijapur. Ali Adil Shah of Adil Shahi dynasty wanted to build a mausoleum of unmatched architectural quality. It was planned that twelve arches would be placed vertically as well as horizontally surrounding the tomb of Ali Adil Shah. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Bara Kaman was built in 1672AD, by Ali Adil Shah II and was supposed to be the burial mausoleum for the king and his wives. The architect of Bara Kaman was Malik Sandal who become a prime figure in Ibrahim Adil Shah's court.
Bara Kaman was commissioned in 167 AD by Ali Adil Shah II, the 8th ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty, who intended it to be his own tomb. Bara Kaman means twelve arches which is included in the design arranged in such a way that they would intersect one another, forming a majestic structure surrounding the central tomb.The construction was deliberately stopped by the ruling court or advisors out of concern that the ambitious design might weaken the political standing of the dynasty or create unrest.
