About Jamia Masjid

Jama Masjid, also known as Jamiya Masjid or Jumma Masjid is a mosque in Bijapur in the Karnataka. It was intiated by Ali Adil Shah I of Bijapur in 16th century. It is the largest mosque in Bijapur and has a capacity of 4,000 worshippers. In 2014, this building was placed in UNESCO's "tentative list" under the Monuments  Forts of the Deccan Sultanate category.

This largest mosque has a capacity of 4,000 worshippers. It is considered one of the best examples of Adil Shahi architecture.  The design & ornamentation of the mosque and it is a consequence of Ali Adil Shah's Shiism(Shila Islam).

History:

The construction of the Jama Masjid was begun by Ali Adil Shah I in 1576 CE.  This construction cost was managed with the money taken from the Battle of Talikota, in which an union of Deccan Sultanates won against Vijayanagara Empire. 

The additon of murals(wall paintings or wall art) near the mosque's central mihrab (wall of a mosque that indicated qibla - direction towards which Muslims should face when praying) made by Muhammad Adil Shah. Aurangzeb added a doorway towards east to the mosque and made modifications to the prayer hall's flooring.

Bijapur bus stand is 2 KM away from this mosque. Maratha Vidyala Bijapur SRS  travels bus stop is the nearest bus stop with a distance of 1 KM from the mosque. You can take a local auto rickshaw or a taxi to reach the mosque easily from either of the stops.
