Upari Burj, also known as Upli Buruj is a popular & important historical watchtower located in Bijapur or Vijaypura. This tall structure, offers best views of Bijapur and its surroundings.It was built during the reign of the Adil Shahi dynasty, and served both military & ceremonial purposes.
History:
It was constructed in 1584 AD by Hyder Khan, a general serving under Ibrahim Adil Shah II. The tower was primarily built as a watchtower, to observe & monitor any movement from a distance. It offers a beautiful open view 360 degrees making it a crucial part of the city's defense system.
It is a crucial stone structure, approximately 80 ft high. A narrow winding staircase inside the tower leads to the top. The top of the tower serves as a viewing platform, offering breathtaking views of Bijapur's iconic structures, including the Gol Gumbaz, Bara Kaman and other forts.
It was one of the many towers that made Bijapur a well-defended city. It was used for surveillance and possibly for signaling during times of war. The tower is an excellent example of medieval military architecture in the Deccan region. It stands as a heritage site, attracting history lovers, photographers, & travelers seeking panoramic views of Bijapur's historic landscape.
