About Vadapalani Murugan Temple'

The Vadapalani Andavar temple also known as Vadapalani Muruagan temple is one of the popular temples of lord Murugan. It is located in Vadapalani near Chennai. Vadapalani means North Palani which got named as it replicates the main deity at the Palani temple in South Tamil Nadu. 

This temple was developed in the late 19th century, around 1890. A devotee named Annaswami Nayakar or Annaswami Tambiran built a small hut for the deity and kept worshiped a painted picture of Lord Murugan. 

Later Ratnasamy Chettiyar continued the devotional activities. The temple was built on the same site at around 1865 using donations from devotees. Later in 1920s, the temple was renovated in which Rajagopuram was built.

Significance:

The Vadapalani Murugan temple is a important spiritual center which got familiar for hosting around 7,000 marriages annually. The temple features lord Murugan (Palani Andavar) in a unique standing posture wearing footwear.

It was built in traditional South Indian style, it includes a Rajagopuram with images or art depicting Skanda Purana. It also includes a 40.8 meter eastern tower with 108 Bharatanatyam poses, a temple tank and sub shrines.

Chennai bus stand is the nearest bus stand at a distance of around 4.5 KM from the temple. You can reach the temple from bus stand by taking a local auto or taxi.Also, buses run frequently in the route.
