Significance:

There was a demon named Vallan who was troubling the Devas. They seek help from Murugan to kill the demon. In this place, lord Murugan killed the demon and established the place as Vallan Kottai which means the "Fort of Vallan".

Indra, the king of Devas requested his Guru Brihaspathi to suggest a place for him to worship Murugan. Brihaspathi suggested Vallakottai as the place of worship of Murugan. Indra then, drilled the earth with his Vajrayudha to extract water and created a tank. This is why the temple tank is named as Vajra Theertha.

The temple is believed to have been built during the 9th century with a five leveled rajagopuram, the gateway tower and pillared mandapa in front of it. The garbha griha (inner shrine) faces East and the idol is 7ft tall in standing posture.
