Harangi Dam or Harangi reservoir is in Hudgur village of Coorg district. The masonry dam is built across the river Harangi, a tributary of the Kaveri. The Harangi river originates in the Pushpagiri hills of the Western Ghats. Heavy rainfall during monsoon is the source of water to this dam. It is about 419.58 sq.km.
The length of the Harangi from its origin to the joint with Kaveri river is 50 KM. It joins Kaveri river near Kudige near Kushalnagar.
The Harangi Reservoir, located before the confluence, covers an area of 20.3 sq.km. The water collection area is a rich biosphere. Near this reservoir about 44 species of birds can be seen. Visitors can also enjoy the elephant camp in Harangi tree park.
Harangi hydroelectric project was set up by Energy Development Company Limited (EDCL) on the left side shore of Harangi dam. It falls under the "Small" category of hydropower projects. The estimated project cost was Rs.11.06 crores and the actual cost reached Rs.58 crores. It covers an area of 20.3 sq. kmm.
This dam is located at a distance of around 8.5 KM from Kushalnagar. So, after reaching Kushalnagar, you can hire a taxi to reach the dam easily.
