The Indira Gandhi Memorial is a museum established to pay tribute to India's first and the only female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is housed in a building where Gandhi lived with her family during her leadership and where she was killed. The museum contains material remains of Gandhi and her son Rajiv Gandhi.
She lived in this house for 20 years until her death on October 31, 1984. After her death, the house was turned to museum in her memory. It is set in a large white bungalow with a well maintained lawn. It is near the Lok Kalyan Marg metro station (Yellow Line), about 800 metres away.
This museum includes personal belongings such as her handbags, clothes, reading glasses, pens, awards, books and a Rubik's cube. The museum also keeps her study room, bedroom and drawing room. There is a section dedicated to her son, Rajiv Gandhi, which displays the last outfit he wore during his targeted killing and photos he had taken.
The museum includes rare photographs of the Indian freedom movement and the Nehru Gandhi family, as well as major events in Indian history like the Green Revolution and the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
By keeping her home as it was, and displaying her personal and political journey, the museum helps visitors understand her contributions are remembered and cherished by the upcoming generations.
