The Lotus Temple is a Baha i House of Worship in Kalkaji, New Delhi. Its construction was completed in December 1986 and is known for its lotus like shape. It is a important attraction in the city and is open to all people.
It contains 27 free standing petal shaped marble panels arranged in group of three to form nine sides with nine doors of entrance to central hall with a height of 34 meters. It has a seating capacity of 1300 people. This temple won many architectural awards and has been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles.
The architect of this temple was an Iranian named Fariborz Sahba, who now lives in La Jolla, California, after spending some years in Canada. He was approached in 1976 to design the Lotus temple. The construction was done by ECC Construction Group of Larsen & Tourbo Limited at a cost of $10.56 million.
The major part of the funds needed to buy this land was donated by Ardishir Rustampur of Hyderabad and Sindh of Pakistan. A portion of the construction was used to build a greenhouse to study local plants and flowers that would be appropriate for use on the site.
NSIC bus stop is the nearest bus stop at a distance of around 1.8 KM from the temple. You can reach the temple by taking a local auto from the bus stop. Delhi bus stand is at a distance of around 22.7 KM and Old Delhi railway station is at a distance of around 19.9 KM from the temple.
