The Kamaraj Sagar dam also called as Sandynalla reservoir is located in the Nilgris district of TamilNadu. It is a picnic & film shooting spot on the slopes of the Wenlock Downs. The dam has a storage capacity of around 26.6 million cubic meters.
In this spot, there are the various tourist activities including fishing & studying nature and environment. It is surrounded by dense forests, grassy slopes, and rolling hills. This dam serves as a peaceful place from the busy tourist places of Ooty.
Significance:
The dam is named after K. Kamaraj, a former Chief Minister of TamilNadu. It is mainly used for water storage, irrigation and fishing. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere and is rich in natural biodiversity.
It holds a special place in Indian cinema as a popular film shooting location. Its calm waters, scenic landscape, and snowy hills have provided a beautiful background for many romantic and dramatic scenes in Bollywood & South Indian films. It is also loved for birdwatching & nature photographers. The calm atmosphere makes it a great picnic spot.
How To Reach:
Ooty central bus stand is located at a distance of around 12.5 KM from the dam. You can reach the dam by taking a local taxi from the bus stand.
