The Badavi linga temple in Hampi is a temple dedicated to lord Shiva in the form of a linga. It is known for its simplicity and excellence, reflecting the religious practices and architectural style of the Vijayanagara empire.
This temple is located near the Hampi Bazaar and is popular temples of Hampi. It is well known for the idol linga which is a large monolithic (single stone) linga in the garbha griha filled with water.
Significance:
It is believed that the linga was created to symbolise the divine presence of lord Shiva in the region. The size of the Badavi linga is about 3 feet high and is placed in a water reservoir symbolising the union of lord Shiva with holy element of water.
It is considered as a symbol of purity, devotion and simplicity. The water surrounding the linga has spiritual importance as it purifies the soul and relieves sins. This linga got the name because it was installed by a poor woman. Badwa means poor and linga means lord Shiva.
