About Krishna Temple

The Krishna temple in Hampi was built by the king Krishnadevaraya in 1531 AD. He initiated this temple to celebrate the winning of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri(currently Orissa state).

The main deity in this temple is Balakrishna which means Lord Krishna as infant. This is one of the important sites of Hampi. It includes pillared halls and many small shrines within the temple. The inscriptions of this temple includes epics on the tower walls.  

Significance:

The Krishna temple is surrounded with Banana trees and a rocky landscape. There is also a temple pond but it is not in use anymore.  The idol in this temple was brought from Udaigiri after his victory.

This idol was now preserved in the Chennai Government museum. The inscriptions and cravings display the scenes from the life of Krishna. It is part of the group of monuments of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi.

The Archaeological Survey of India helps preserve the temple's history and structure. The remains of the temple still exhibit the artisitc excellence of the empire. It is a living temple and has been preserved for centuries.

Hampi bus stand is just 650m away from the temple and you can easily reach by walk from bus stand.
