About Lakshmi Narasimha

The Lakshmi Narasimha swamy temple is one of the group of monuments in Hampi. The idol of Narasimha in this temple is on the coil(rounded loop) of a giant seven headed snake called Sesha. The seven heads of the snake acts as the hood(helmet or head covering) above the lord's head.

This idol is referred as Ugra Narasimha. Narasimha means half-man half-lion is one of the ten forms of lord Vishnu. Lion face of Lakshmi Narasimha is also called as Ugra Narasimha.

History:

Earlier, the Narasimha idol in this temple also contained the consort idol of  goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap. It was damaged during the raid that led to the fall of Vijayanagara.

This temple was built in 1528 CE during the ruling period of Vijayanagara ruler Krishnadevaraya. It is the fourth avatar of lord Vishnu. The idol is carved from a single granite statue with 22 feet height.

In 1565 CE, after the battle of Talikota, enemy armies raided and destroyed many parts of Hampi including this temple. In result, Goddess Lakshmi idol was seperated. The idol of Narasimha reprsents the strength of good over evil.

How To Reach:

Hampi bus stand is just 700 m away from the temple and you can reach the temple by walk easily.
