About Mint House

The Mint House in Hampi is a important historical monument that reflects the economic strength of Vijayanagara Empire. It is believed to be the place where coins were manufactured and stored during the Vijayanagara empire.

This mint house is situated within the Royal Enclosure and is close to other military buildings. It was designed with security and function.

Significance:

Coins made of gold, silver, and copper were produced in the Mint House and were used across South India for trade and administration. Each coin often carried royal symbols, inscriptions or deities as a symbol of royal authority and trust.

Archaeological research have found coins, tools, and metal leftovers in and around the site. Some coins found here have inscriptions in kananda, telugu, sanskrit and Persian languages showing the wide usage of the currency. 

How To Reach:

It is situated within the Royal Enclosure which is located at a distance of around 3 KM from the Hampi bus stand. You can reach the enclosure by taking a local taxi or a auto from the bus stand.
