The old bridge pillars in Hampi are the pillars of a ancient bridge which was existed behind the Vittala temple. The ancient bridge was constructed by Kampabupa in 14th century. He was the brother of the king Harihara II(ruler of Vijayanagara Kingdom from 1377 to 1404).
The bridge served as a connection of Anegondi on the north bank of Tungabhadra river to the town of Hampi. It was a long bridge but after the raid bridge was ruined. The only remaining part is the stone pillars which were a support of the top of the bridge.
Significance:
The bridge was built at a point where the river Tungabhadra seperates and rejoins again resulted in formation of a small rocky island. The pillars were raised at one branch of the river after blocking the flow of water through it. All the water was allowed to pass through other branch.
This bridge is symbol of Vijayanagara empire's greatness. These pillars connected important areas of the city giving facilities to trading, transportation and communication. The Tungabhadra river divides Hampi into two regions Hampi bazaar and Anegondi. They were connected through this bridge.
