About Underground Temple

The Underground temple in Hampi is also called as Prasanna Virupaksha temple and is one of the hidden gems of Hampi. It is situated within the Royal Enclosure of the Vijayanagara Empire and is an fascinating structure because of its architecture.

This temple is named like that because it is partly buried, with a majority of the structure built below ground level. It is dedicated to lord Virupaksha, a form of Lord Shiva. 

Significance: 

This temple was likely constructed during the Vijayanagara Empire, a period known for its impressive architecture during the ruling period of Krishnadevaraya.

It is considered one of the oldest active temples in India and serves as the supporting temple of the main Virupaksha temple. The underground chambers are beautifully and carefully carved with pillars, sculptures, and designs. It is built up with granite stone and there will be no sunlight within the temple. 

How To Reach:

Hampi bus stand is around 2.2 KM far from the temple and can be reached easily by taking a local taxi or auto from the bus stand.
