The Vitthala or Vittala temple is one of the ancient monuments located in Nimbapura, near Hampi and is the largest & most famous structure. This temple is dedicated to lord Vittala, a form of lord Vishnu. It includes the best architecture, musical pillars, ideal stone chariot or ratham.
It was built in Dravidian architectural style which combines beauty, grand look and attention to detail. This temple reflects the artisitc brilliance and engineering skills and is part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi.
History:
This popularly worshipped Vijaya Vittala temple is of 15th century and was built in the ruling period of King Devaraya II, ruler of Vijayanagara Empire. During the ruling period of Krishnadevaraya, some areas of this temple were expanded and developed. The present look of the temple was brought by Krishnadevaraya after making several changes.
The Vittala temple is also known as Sri Vijaa Vittala temple. The temple reflects prosperity, power and culture. It is an important historical and cultural landmark. The name Vijaya in the temple refers to the overcoming of Lord Vishnu over evil, symbolizing divine victory.
