The Kamakshi Amman temple or Kamakshi devi temple in Kanchipuram is also known as Kamakoti Nayaki kovil which is dedicated to goddess Kamakshi. Goddess Kamakshi is one of the highest aspects of Adi Parashakti, the supreme goddess in Shaktism.
It is one of the most important centers of Shaktism in the state of TamilNadu. It is also a shrine for Vishnu in the form of Varaha. Kamakshi devi is worshiped in five forms in this temple and is called as Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
The temple was founded by the Pallava kings in the 5th-8th century. It was worshiped by the Vaishnavite Alvars(Tamil saint poets) of 6th-9th century. This temple was modified in 14th and 17th century.
According to a legend, after the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565 the statue had been carried throughout South India by attendants, seeking a permanent temple.
The temple is spread within an area of 5 acres and is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of TamilNadu.
