The Arakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. The museum is actually a section of the Arakkalkettu or Arakkal Royal Palace. The durbar hall section of the palace has been converted to a museum by the Kerala Government. It was opened in July 2005 after a renovation worth Rs.9,000,000.
It is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Arakkal family(Muslim royal family) in Kerala. It is housed in a section of the Arakkal Palace which represent a unique mix of Kerala and Islamic architecture. The exhibits in the museum are royal artifacts, furniture, weapons, coins and documents that narrate the story of the Arakkal dynasty's rule, culture and maritime trade connections.
This museum has a great historical importance as it represents the Muslim royal heritage in Kerala. The dynasty maintained strong bond with Arab traders and were known for their naval strength(Navy) during their rule over parts of Lakshadweep and the Malabar Coast.
The museum preserves & displays their legacy, so that visitors can understand their governance, culture and contributions to Kerala's diverse heritage. It shows how the Arakkal rulers, though they belonged to a different religion, they maintained peaceful relations with the largely Hindy community and others around them.
