Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was built in the honour of the father of our nation. It was located in Kanyakumari and is also known as Gandhi Mandapam. This memorial is one of the important attractions in Kanyakumari which takes you to a historical richness of India along with life of Gandhiji.
He visited Kanyakumari twice in 1925 & 1937. After his assassination, his ashes were kept in 12 different pots and one of the pots was in Kanyakumari. The pot was placed in the memorial for public to pay their respect towards him. Later they were immersed in sea waters at Kanyakumari.
The construction of Mahatma Gandhi memorial was completed in 1956. It is an excellent example of modern architecture which used Orissa style of architecture.
Significance:
This memorial has the best view of the surrounding areas from the top of the memorial. There is a library showcasing books, magazines, pamphlets and other kinds of literature from the pre independence times. The library can be visited on Friday & Saturday of every week.
There are also various photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and other great personalities who contributed for India. This memorial was located near Kanyakumari Devi temple. In 1978, this memorial came under the control of the Public Department of Tamil Nadu Government.
How To Reach:
Kanyakumari bus stand is located at a distance of around 1.2 KM and railway station is located at a distance of 1.4 KM from this memorial. You can reach memorial by taking a local taxi or auto rickshaw easily.
