The Durga Parameshwari temple or Kateel devi temple is located in Kateel town on an island in Nandini river. This temple is dedicated to goddess Durga Parameshwari in the form of an Udhbhava Moorthi which means naturally formed. The pillars of the temple also has beautiful sculptures.
Long ago, a demon named Arunasura got his wish fulfilled from lord Brahma that he could not be killed by an two-legged or four-legged creature. With that boon he become a threat to the world and he started troubling gods and humans. Sages and deities prayed goddess Durga to resolve this issue. Then goddess took the form of a cluster of bees (Bhramara Devi) which is neither two legged nor four legged. In that form she destroyed the demon Arunasura.
The fight to kill the demon is believed to have taken place on a rock in the middle of the Nandini river. At this place, now there is a temple of goddess Durga Parameshwari. This temple is also famous place for Yakshagana performances.
Kateel bus stand is just 140 m away from the temple. You can directly halt at bus stand and reach the temple by walk easily.
