About Patteeswaram temple

The Patteeswaram temple is also called as Thenupuriswarar temple which is a hindu temple dedicated to lord Shiva. It is located in the Patteeswaram village of TamilNadu. Lord Shiva is being worshipped as Thenupuriswarar in the form of lingam in this temple along with his consort goddess Parvati represented as Nyanambikai(Somakamalambigai). 

This temple's deity is worshipped in the 7th century CE . The temple is associated with the legend  of Sambandar to whose view Nandi moved to have a direct view of the presiding deity. The temple complex covers around four acres and entered through a seven layered gopuram. 

Significance:

The temple has a number of shrines with those of Thenupuriswarar, his consort Somakamalambigai and Durga, being the most prominent. All the shrines of the temple are bounded in large granite walls.

The temple has six daily rituals and four yearly festivals on its calendar. The Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated during the month of the Chaitram(April-May). 

The name Patteeswaram was derived from the daughter of the holy cow Kamadhenu-Patti, who worshipped the lord here. Tirugnana Sambandar came to Thirusattimutram with Adiyarssaints) to worship at the Shiva temple. The solar movement was towards the Mithuna star causing more heat waves which in result child Sambandar could not manage. Then the lord sent his servants(bhoodaganas) to decorate the streets with beautiful Muthu pandal(ceiling made of Pearl).

Patteswaram bus stop is the nearest bus stop at a distance of 400 m from the temple. You can reach the temple easily by walk from the bus stop.
