About Thanjavur Royal Palace

Thanjavur Royal Palace is commonly referred as Thanjavur Maratha Palace. It is locally known as Aranmanai and is the official residence of Bhonsle family that ruled the region from 1674 to 1855. 

This palace complex consists of the Sadar Mahal Palace, the queen's courtyard and the Durbar hall. There is a museum in the palace which includes collection of Chola bronzes. The Raja Serfoji Memorial hall & the Royal Palace museum are in the Sadar Mahal Palace.

There is also a small bell towe and Saraswati Mahal Library are present here. There is also a Chandramouleeswarar temple located within the premises.

History:

The Thanjavur Maratha palace was originally constructed by the rulers of Thanjavur Nayak kingdom. After the end of their ruling period it served as official residence of Thanjavur Marathas.  Thanjavur Marathas continued to hold the palace and the surrounding fort and Bhonsle family continue to hold on to the palace even after the last king, Shivaji of Thanjavur.
