The Nannesvara temple also called as Nanneshvara temple is an eleventh century temple in Lakkundi. This temple houses the deity Lord Shiva in the form of Linga and is known for being the earliest known imperial style temple of Kalyana Chalukyas.
This temple is located west to the Kasivisvesvara twin temple and is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Significance :
This temple has a large, open pillared ranga mandapa which is a devotee reception hall. It also contains a gudha-mandapa(assembly hall) and a garbagriha.
The temple is built on a raised platform using soapstone material which is a Chalukyan architectural innovation that became popular in 12th & 13th century Chalukya & Hoysala constructions.
The vimana is a three storeyed and this structure is a composition that combines forms and shapes found in the west, central, east and southern parts of the Indian subcontinent.
The gudhamandapa is of square plan and has a flight of steps for an entrance, with beautifully sized and carved dvarapalas. The sanctum(garba griha) is a square and has a idol of lord Shiva in the form of a linga.
How To Reach:
Gadag bus stand is located at a distance of around 10.8 KM from the temple. Lakkundi SH67 bus stop is just 700m away from the temple. You can reach the temple just by walk or by taking a local taxi from Gadag bus stand.
