The Lockhart Tea Factory is a popualr tea processing unit which is situated at the nearest distance from Munnar on the Thekkady road. It is settled in the middle of vast tea planations, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills. This factory was established in 1936 and is a live example to the traditional methods of producing tea.
Usually tea factories use "Crush, Tear, Curl"(CTC) methods, but this factory still continues to use the traditional method which involves withering, rolling, fermenting and drying the tea leaves. This traditional techniques is said to contribute to the high quality and distinct flavor of the tea.
This factory exhibits the different stages of tea production, and various types of tea like black tea, green tea and others which are derived from the same plant based on processing. The factory also has a sales outlet where visitors can purchase freshly proecessed tea.
It is one of the earliest tea plantations in the Munnar region. The Lockhart Estate, the factory was initially established in 1879 by Baron John Von Rosenberg and his son, Baron George Otto Von Rosenberg. They first experimented with cinchona and coffee before knowing the importance of tea cultivation in this high altitude area. For tourists, it offers a educational experience allowing them to connect with the rich history of Munnar's tea industry and appreciate the journey from tea leaves to tea powder.
Munnar bus stand is the nearest stop located at a distance of around 9.3 KM from the tea factory. You can take a local bus or auto from the bus stand to reach the factory.
