The Tibetan Monastery is also known as Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe near Mysore. The formal name of this monastery is Thegchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargye Ling Monastery. It is the largest teaching center of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. It is home to a sangha community of more than 5000 monks and nuns and qualified teachers, a junior high school, a Buddhist philosophy college and a hospial.
This monastery was established by the 11 th throneholder of the Palyul lineage, the 3rd Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche in 1963. This was developed after 1959 escape from Tibet.The Palyul Monastery and it 400 brances are considered one of the Nyingma school's "Six Mother Monasteries" in Tibet. The initial challenges included rampaging elephants, lack of roads and funds. Now this monastery has grown into the largest Nyingma school monastery in the world.
You can reach Bylakuppe by bus from Mysore. From Mysore, it takes 1h 53 m of travel time to reach through Mangalore-Mysore highway.
