King's Balance is located in the heritage site, Hampi near Nimbapura. It is also known as Tula Bhara or Tula Purushadana which is close to the Vijaya Vittala temple complex.
This is a stone structure with two carved pillars and a horizontal beam. It is believed that it was used by the Vijayanagara kings as part of traditional gift giving.
Significance:
It was built during the Vijayanagara Empire and the ritual of weighing represents the concept of serving poor people. These donations were done during important festivals or after victories in war.
The king would sit or stand on one side of the balance and on the other side the equal weight of gold, jewels or grains would be placed. After that it was used to be donated to priests or the poor.
