About Old Bridge Pillars

The Old Bridge Pillars is located in Hampi, near Nimbapura. It is situated behind the Vittala temple which is in south direction to the Purandaradasa mantapa.

This bridge is constructed at a point where Tungabhadra river seperates and rejoins back to form a tiny rocky island. It is an ancient stone bridge with a long line of granite pillars which supported a large bridge.

History:

This bridge is believed to have been built during the 16th century, during the Vijayanagara ruling period. It served as a important connection between the Vittala temple complex and the Anegundi region across the Tungabhadra river. The stone bridge was used for transportation of goods and vehicles.

The pillars represent advanced engineering in that time. It connected temples across the river and serves as a reminder of the travel, trade and temple activities that once celebrated in Hampi which is now recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Nimbapura is 3 KM away from this site. Hampi bus stand is just 89m away from this  old bridge pillars and you can reach by walk easily.
