About Vijaya Vittala Temple

Vijaya Vittala temple is located in Hampi which is near Nimbapura. It is one of the most large temple with rich architecture. This temple houses the deity Lord Vittala, a form of Vishnu. 

This temple got popular for its elaborate carvings, iconic stone ratha and musical pillars. It is one of the most visited monuments within the UNESCO World Heritage site, Hampi.

History:

This temple cosntruction was began during the ruling period of King Devaraya II (1422-1446 AD) of the Vijayanagara empire. It was later extended by great rulers like Krishnadevaraya in early 16th century. He added the stone chariot(ratham) and other marvels.

This temple was a place for cultural and musical performamces and a center for lord Vishnu worshippers during the Vijayanagara ruling period.

It has a uniqye feature of musical pillars which are 56 in the Ranga mandapa. When you tap on the pillar you can listen to a musical note. Each pillar gives a different musical note. 

How To Reach:

Hampi bus stand is located at a distance of 2.3 KM from this temple. You can reach the temple by taking a auto rickshaw or a local taxi from bus stand.
