The Government rose garden formerly known as Jayalalithaa Rose Garden is in Ooty. The Rose Park was developed at Vijayanagaram to celebrate the 100th anniversary flower show in Government Botanical Gardens in May 1995. The flowers are arranged in five curving terraces covering four hectares and this garden is maintained by the TamilNadu Horticulture Department.
Significance:
The climate in Ooty makes it ideal for growing roses. This garden is spread across 4 hectares of land and houses some of the largest collections of roses including miniature roses, hybrid tea roses, floribunda, ramblers, black and green roses and other varieties.
There are more than 20,000 varieties of roses and is one of the largest collections of roses in India. All these plants here were assembled from different sources around the world.
The garden has been laid out with rose tunnels, rose creepers. The slopes of the garden also features the Nila Maadam from where tourists can observe the entire rose garden.
