The Lakshmana teertham is a holy water tank in Rameswaram which is dedicated to Lord Lakshmana. He is the younger brother of Lord Rama and is a spiritual & historical destination. This teertham is built near Lakshmana temple and is surrounded by corridors and sculptures displaying the episodes of Ramayana.
Significance:
According to puranas, Lakshmana created this teertham to seek forgiveness for killing Indrajit, the son of Ravana, during the Lanka war. Devotees believe that bathing in this teertham helps cleanse sins.
This temple was built in Dravidian style of architecture and has an attractive structure. The temple has carved idols of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana and Goddess Sita. There are also marble statues of Lord Lakshmana. The carvings inside the temple represent the devotion of Lord Lakshmana towards Goddess Sita and Lord Rama.
The pond or teertham has a mandapam in the center and from there one can reach to the source of this water through steps or stairs. Lord Lakshmana installed a lingam & offered prayers to Lord Shiva here.
How To Reach:
Rameshwaram bus stand & railway station are located just 1 KM away from the teertham. You can reach the temple by an auto rickshaw or by walk.
