Panchamukhi Hanuman temple also known as Five-faced Hanuman temple is one of the popular & prominent shrines in Rameswaram. Lord Hanuman is the main deity of this shrine which uniquely features a rare idol of Hanuman with five faces representing a different form and direction.

Significance Of Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple

According to Puranas, lord Hanuman changed to the Panchamukhi form during the Ramayana war to kill the demon Mahiravana and rescue Lord Rama & Lakshmana. The five faces are Hanuman(east), Narasimha(South), Garuda(west), Varaha(north) and Hayagriva(Upwards).Each face symbolizes a powerful aspect of deity. Hanuman(strength), Narasimha (protection), Garuda(removal of evil), Varaha(prosperity) and Hayagriva (knowledge). 

The temple also houses floating stones believed to be part of the bridge(Ram Setu) that Lord Rama and his army built to reach Lanka. These stones are a major attraction and considered miraculous by devotees.It is located close to the Ramanathaswamy temple and a huge number of devotees seek blessings from such powerful diety. Devotees get inspired from Hanuman's devotion, and can get visiual reality of Ramayana.

How To Reach Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple

Rameshwaram bus stand and railway station are located at a distance of around 1 KM from the temple. You can reach to the temple by walk or by taking an auto rickshaw.
