Sringeri Sharadamba temple is a famous Hindu temple in Sringeri, Karnataka. The main deity here is Sharadamba and the temple was founded by Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century CE.The temple houses a idol of Sharadamba in a standing position that was made up of sandalwood. This idol was in existence until the Vijayanagara kings started ruling. In 14th century, Sri Vidyaranyu(the 12th Jagadguru) installed a golden idol.
The idol here was established by Sri Adi Sankaracharya and includes a Sri Chakra. Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati raised the present temple structure in granite with polished granite walls around the garbha griha. Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati opened the new temple in May 1916.
The Mahamandapam has huge stone pillars carved with deities like Durga, Raja Rajeshwari, Dwarapalakas and Devis which are all sculpted according to the Shilpa Sastras of Tamilnadu.
Navaratri festival is celebrated grandly in this temple for 11 days annually. On Mahanavami day, Shathachandi Homa Poornahuti will be performed. On the Chaitra Shukla Poornima day, special pooja is performed in this temple. On Magha Shukla Panchami, Lalitha Panchami is celebrated with special pooja performed to Sri Sharadamba by Jagadguru. On Karthika Poornima day Deepothsavan is conducted here. Rathothsavam is grandly celebrated here on Magha Masa Trithiya tidhi day.
Sringeri bus stand is around 800m away from the temple and can be reached easily by walk.
