The Srirangapatna Fort is believed to have been built in 1454 CE by 15th century ruler of Chitradurga, Timmanna Nayaka. He is a ruler of Vijayanagar Empire. This fort was taken up by the Wodeyars in 1495. During 1782, Tipu Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali, took the ruling authority of the fort and built fort walls. Tipu Sultan built the mosque close to his palace with three inscriptions that mention the nine names of Muhammad, an Islamic prophet(who spread God's message). These inscriptions also mention that Tipu Sultan was the builder of the mosque which includes madrasah ( a type of education institution) and a cloister(a covered walk, open arcade along the walls) for rooms.
