The Brihadeeswara temple or Peruvudaiyar Koil is an ancient Hindu temple located in Thanjavur, TamilNadu. It is a Shaivite temple(Shiva temple) that was built by the Cholas in the 11th century.The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the largest temple in India. This structure was built by Kunjara Rajaraja Perunthachan, a technical expert and architect. These things are represented in the inscriptions.
Raja Raja Chola's son Rajendra Chola I built another Brihadeeswara temple in Gangikonda Cholapuram. The architectural forms in the temple are a reflection of the Chola architectural style. The large Nandi idol in front of the temple and the Shivalinga in the inner shrine, which is 13.5 ft high and 60 ft wide are the attractions of the temple. There are also sculptures of Vishnu with Bhudevi, Shiva with Parvati, Markandeya's history and many other sculptures.
Thanjavur bus stand is located at a distance of around 5.2 KM from the temple. You can take a local auto to reach the temple from bus stand.
