The Mariamman temple or Arulmigu Sri Mariamman temple is in Samayapuram and is an ancient Hindu temple in Tiruchirappalli district of TamilNadu. The main deity in this temple is Mariamman, a form of Adi Parashakti.
The idol is made of sand and clay with extractions of medicinal herbs and is considered the most powerful goddess. So, there are no abhishekams conducted to the main deity, but instead the abhishekam is done to the small stone statue in front of it.
The present temple was built in the early 18th century by the king Vijayaraya Chakravarti II. It is believed that the locals worshipped the Goddess for many centuries before building the current temple.
One legend says that the present deity was at the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam, and one of the chief priests of the temple believed that the idol caused illness to Ranganathar and hence asked it to be removed from the temple.
Thai Poosam usually occurs in the Tamil month of Thai. The main festival is celebrated in April, including the temple chariot(ratham)and lake parades called teppams.
Samayapuram bus stop is the nearest bus stop from the temple with a distance of around 2.5 KM. You can reach the temple by taking a local auto or taxi from the bus stand.
