Bavikonda, means "Hill of Wells", is an ancient Buddhist complex near Visakhapatnam. It is situated on a hill at an altitude of about 130m above sea level. As per the name, Bavikonda is a hill with wells for the collection of rainwater.
Bavikonda is home to ancient monastery related ruins that trace back to the 3rd century BCE. A large Buddhist complex was dug up at this site. The uncovered remains here are inscriptions, tiles, bricks, coins, pottery and more.
There are remains dugged up in this site by the State Archaeological Department. The Buddhist sites of Thotlakonda and Pavurallakonda are situated close by.
The Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has requested authorities to ensure better protection of Buddhist sites by taking up the declaration of Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, Pavurallakonda and Bojjannakonda as heritage site by UNESCO.
