The Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha swamy temple is located on the Simhachalam hill range, which is 300 metres above sea level in the Vizag city. It is dedicated to lord Vishnu, being worshipped in the form of Varaha Narasimha.
As per the temple's legend, lord manifested in this form with lion's head and human body after saving his devotee Prahlasa from a murder attempt by Hiranyakashipu. The idol of Varaha Narasimha is covered with sandalwood paste throughout the year except on Akshaya Tritiya.
The temple was built in Kalingan architecture styles and stands unique in the historical region of Kalinga. The present structure was built by Eastern Ganga dynasty king Narasingha Deva I in the 13th century and was spiritually inaugurated by Bhanudeva I in 1268 CE.
The Sthala Purana of Simhachalam consists of 32 chapters, denoting the number of forms of Narasimha. Dr.V.C Krishnamacharyulu states that the legends of Simhachalam and other Hindu temples in Andhra Pradesh were written in the 14th century after attempts were made to spread Islam in the area.
Simhachalam bus stand is located at a distance of around 5 KM from the temple. You can take a bus from the bus stand to reach the temple. Buses run frequently in the route.
