Catherine falls is a two stage waterfall in Kotagiri near Coonoor. It is a prime attraction on the Mettupalayam road with a turn off at Aravenu. The upper water falls down to the floor and is the second highest waterfall in the Nilgiri mountains. The waters from the upper stream of the Kallar river crosses by the Mettupalayam-Ooty road beyond the mountains. The total height of both falls is around 250 ft.
Catherine falls is named after the wife of M.D. Cockburn. He is said to have introduced coffee plantations to Kotagiri. The original name of Catherine falls is Geddhehadda Halla, which means "Foothills Dale River". The entire waterfall can clearly be seen from the top of Dolphin's Nose. It is also possible to reach top of the falls on road.
These falls draws its water from the upper stream of Kallar River. It is surrounded by tea plantations and dense forests which gives a perfect scenic view for visitors. The falls can be completely viewed from Dolphin's Nose viewpoint. From there you can see a open view of these waters.To get a closer experience, visitors can come via the road to the top of the falls or can trek via treking paths. It offers the best opportunity to capture the cool ambiance and its surroundings. All the natural beauty makes it a must visit destination for all kind of travelers.
These falls are located in Kotagiri which is at a distance of around 21.5 KM from Coonoor. Kotagiri bus stand is 7.8 KM from the falls. Aravenu is the nearest stop to these falls at a distance of around 5 KM and you can halt here if you drive through Mettupalyam-Ooty road. Else, you can hire a taxi from Kotagiri bus stand.
