Golden temple also known as Namdroling Monastery is located in Bylakuppe, Coorg district. It is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. This Golden temple can accommodate around 16000 forced migrants and 600 monks. Nyingma or Ngangyur is the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism and was founded by Padmasambhava.
This Golden temple is the largest teaching center of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. It is home to over 5000 monks & nuns and qualified teachers along with a junior high school named "Yeshe Wodsal Sherab Raldri Ling". It also has a Buddhist philosophy college for both monks and nuns.
History:
This monastery or golden temple is developed by the 11th ruler of the Palyul family in 1963. It was founded after his escape from Tibet in 1959. The Palyul Monastery and its 400 brances is considered one of the Nyingma school's "Six Mother Monasteries".
From these beginnings, Namdroling has grown into the largest Nyingma school monastery in the world.
