Madikeri Fort also known as Mercara Fort is in Madikeri. It was first built by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century. There is also a palace within the fort. It was rebuilt with granite by Tipu Sultan and renamed as Jaffarabad. It is one of the many forts built by Tipu Sultan during his ruling period. In 1790, Dodda Vira Rajendra took control of the fort. This fort includes two elephant statues and a church. Today, the Madikeri Deputy Commissioner's Office is housed in the palace building.
The Church has the Madikeri Fort museum managed by the Archaeological Department of Karnataka. It includes display of artifacts and weaponry from the time between the fort's construction and British rule. The museum also has a large portrait of K. M. Cariappa (Indian military officer & Indian Commander -In-Chief of Indian Army). The Church was constructed in 185 by soldiers of the East India Company, with funding from the Madras Presidency. The church was taken over by the Government of Karnataka in 1971.
