The Parliament House in New Delhi is the seat of the Parliament of India. It houses the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, which are lower and upper houses respectively. It is located on Rafi Marg in Central Vista, the central administrative area in New Delhi.
It is located east to the Old Parliament House which was constructed in 1927. In the early 2010s proposals for a new parliament building emerged. In 2019, the proposal to construct a new parliament building was announced by the Government of India as part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project.
Significance
This building was inaugurated on 28 May 2023 by then Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new building was first used for official business on 19 September 2023 during a special session of the parliament.
The new building was designed by architect Bimal Patel for the firm HCP Design, Planning and Management. The construction contract was awarded by the Central Public Works Department to Tata Projects.
The construction of the building started in January 2021. The construction involved materials from various parts of the country. The red and white sandstone, greenstone and red granite were received from Rajasthan, the teak wood from Maharastra and the carpets from Uttar Pradesh. The construction of the entire project was completed on 20 May 2023.
Krishi Bhawan is the nearest bus stop to the Parliament which is just 400m and can be reached easily by walk.
