The Kanjanur Sukran temple also known as the Agniswarar temple is a hindu temple in the village of Kanjanur near Kumbakonam. This temple houses the deity of Sukra Graha or Venus planet and the main deity of this temple is lord Siva worshiped as Agniswarar.
According to Saivite belief lord Shiva is present everywhere, it is believed that Sukra(Venus) is located in the stomach of Shiva's idol. The temple was built by the Medieval Cholas and was rennovated (modified) by the kings of the Vijayanagar Empire. It has a 5-step rajagopuram surrounded by two prakarams(outer part around the Hindu temple inner shrine either enclosed or open).
According to a Hindu legend, it is said to be that lord Siva blessed Parasara muni(sage) here with cosmic dance. It is believed that Shiva appeared in the form of Sukra to free himself from the effects of Sukra dosha. This temple has a rich history dating back many centuries and is one of the prominent Navagraha temples which is particularly linked to the planet Sukran(Venus).
The architecture and inscriptions within the temple provide glimpses into the cultural & religious practices of the region during different historical periods. Historical and cultural features of the temple adds to its spiritual significance for those who visit and worship there. This temple was built on the northern banks of river Kaveri.
