Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is a major tourist destination in the district and is a natural lake situated in the middle of evergreen forests and mountain slopes at a height of around 770 meters above sea level.
Panamaram, the streamlet(a small stream -a tiny flow of water) which ultimately becomes Kabani river, originates from Pookode Lake. This is the smallest freshwater lake in Kerala, situated at the highest altitude. It is spread across an area of 8.5 hectares and has a depth of around 6.5 metres.
The Pookode Lake forms a shape of India map in aerial view. This ever flowing freshwater lake is surrounded by hills and is a rare natural gem in Kerala. A species of fish called Pethia pookodensis is found exclusively in Pookode Lake.
The lake has a plenty of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. Boating facility is also accessible at this lake and you can see many wild animals, birds and flies as the lake is surrounded by the forests. There are groups of Blue water lily flowers in this lake. Attractions like a children's park, handicrafts and spices emporium & fresh water aquarium are also available here.
Thalipuzha bus stop in Pookode is the nearest stop to Pookode lake at a distance of around 1 KM. You can take a local bus or auto from the bus stop to reach the lake.
