The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the oldest & most important churches in India. It was first built as a church by the Portugese in 1505 and later became a cathedral in 1558. The present church was rebuilt around 1905 after earlier versions were destroyed, and in 1984 it was honored with the title "Basilica" by Pope John Paul II.
The building shows a mix of European & Indian styles with two tall towers on the outside & colorful paintings and stained glass inside. Brother Antonio Moscheni, the famous artist along with his student painted scenes like the Last Supper on the ceiling, making the church very special.
It is a significant church because it represents the rich history of Kochi. It was built soon after the Portugese arrived & helped show the arrival of European influence through religion, trade and culture. Although it was destroyed by the British in 1795, it was rebuilt and became a lasting symbol of religious heritage in Kerala.
Today, it is a popular place for prayer & tourism. Its beautiful architecture & art bring visitors across the world. It is one of only eight basilicas(special churches that are the head of the Catholic Church) in India and remains a special and historical landmark in Kochi.
Fort Kochi bus stand is the nearest stop from the Basilica at a distance of around 400m and is reachable easily by walk from the bus stand.
