Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple the Kaveri river with famous temples where Vishnu is worshipped in the form of Ranganatha (or lord of the (cosmos as a) stage). Srirangapatna on the upper course of Cauvery at 2,200 ft elevation is called Adya (or the early) Ranga.
According to Garuda Purana, Kaveri, who was brought to the earth by Sage Agastya, is said to yearn for association with Vishnu just like Ganga and Yamuna. So Vishnu self-manifested Svayamvyakta in many places along the river. Besides these two places, a third place called Madhya Ranga is on Shivasamudra island. First rites on Srirangam were done by Vibheeshana while Srirangapatna was done shortly after that by the Sage Gotama.
Srirangapatna, first built by the Gangas, was the seat of the viceroy of Vijayanagar, early Wodeyar kings and, most famously, Hyder Ali and Tipu. The lord of this temple is supposed to have bestowed many miracles on Hyder and his entire Zenana would participate in the Utsava celebrations of the temple. Hyder is supposed to have occupied Srirangam later during the Carnatic wars.Today, despite their hoary history, Srirangapatna is just a suburb of Mysore
