Kodaikanal is a combination of two Tamil words 'Kodai' which means 'gift' and Kanal which means 'forest'. The translated meaning of it is "gift to the forest". It is located at a height of around 7,300 ft in the Palani Hills. Kodaikanal was developed in 1845 to serve as a shelter from high temperatures and tropical diseases(climate sensitive diseases) like Malaria, Dengue.

It is a popular tourist destination which is called by another name called "Princess of Hill Stations".  The temperatures remain cool throughout the year here and has the coolest attractions to visit. Movie shootings were also done here at popular attraction Guna Caves.
